Yesterday the American Broadband Deployment Act of 2026 (HR 2289) was scheduled to be voted on by the House of Representatives.
Thanks to lovers of SIGN UP FOR THE freedom who made their voices heard - the bill was posponed.
Advocacy groups flooded congressional phone lines.
Citizens used one-click Request to Speak to bombard representatives with messages.
The opposition was bipartisan, broad, and loud.
Yesterday, on April 20, 2026, House leadership blinked.
The bill was paused for debate.
Had it passed, HR 2289 would have been one of the most sweeping federal power grabs over local government in the history of American telecommunications law. This bill would have been a full-scale federal takeover of the rights of property owners and municipalities.
HR 2289 would have effectively eliminated local government authority over where cell towers, small cells, and antennas could be placed, next to your home, next to your child’s school, in the middle of your neighborhood, without your community having any meaningful say.
Local governments under this bill would have been legally required to approve virtually any antenna on any existing structure: utility poles, light poles, overhead wires, apartment buildings, single-family homes, and schools.
While our government is far from perfect, yesterday's events show that when people unite on a local level, we can make a difference.
While the battle for freedom was won yesterday, the war wages on.
Expect this bill to reemerge as another version as House representatives and telecom (the military industrial complex) tries to throw us a bone.
